Object Information:

NGC2244 is an open cluster surrounded by extensive nebulosity (NGC2237) in that distinctive annular pattern that is now so well-known to fans of astronomical images.  About 1530 parsecs distant, the "Rosette" is nearly 100 light-years across, and in fact extends (tenuously) all the way to NGC2264.  This image is pretty tame compared to the incredible, colorful images that abound on the web and in the scientific literature.  Yet, this image does show how the large size and low surface-brightness of the nebulosity make it a difficult object to see visually in many telescopes, although a good pair of binoculars may reveal slightly more than the central open cluster.

Tim Lewis   This is very nice. I particularly like the little halos around the brighter stars. Nicely captured and processed.   2/15/2010
