I have been in contact with Bo Reipurth at the University of Hawaii. After a few email exchanges, this is an excerpt of what he wrote back...
"...At this point we cannot say what is happening with this nebula, although I am cautiously optimistic that it is a new young eruptive variable, like an EXor or FUor. We will be doing some sampling observations at Mauna Kea to see if we can narrow it down any further. We are routinely doing monitoring observations of most of the star forming regions of the sky and I just checked and found that we have 12 images of this region,
