NGC 4038
Antennae ring tail galaxies
Imager:  Dave Goodin

Imaged Date:

Object Information:

A very strange pair of colliding galaxies, with two long curved tails formed by the graviational shock wave of the galaxies passing through each other.

This one wants a lot more exposure to show the tails fully, but its a start.

The cores are a nice visual target but  the tails are very faint.

This image required a special effort to remove an artifact called the "dark river" that plagues the Canon 20D and 20Da models. In short, a series of very low light "dark" frames were collected and removed from the imges during calibration with the standard dark, flat and bias frames.

Dave,

Awesome shot of a tough target. You sure kno whow to tease every bit of detail out of your shots and sets the bar for the rest of us.
